Format
DJ With Live Instruments
A DJ with live instruments is a DJ set performed with one or more musicians playing live over the mix — commonly saxophone, percussion, violin, vocals or guitar. Mixmode performs one version of this format and only one: DJ Jordan Miller with Kristian Cruz on live electric guitar, rehearsed and toured as a single act.
Which instrument over a DJ set?
An honest comparison, based on what we hear in rooms rather than on what is easiest to sell. We chose electric guitar and stayed with it.
Electric guitarMixmode
What Mixmode plays. Cuts through a mastered mix, carries a lead at festival volume, and covers the guitar already present in country, rock and punk source material.
Saxophone
Common in house and open-format rooms. Strong for cocktail hours and lounge energy; less able to reproduce the hooks of guitar-driven records.
Percussion
Adds drive and texture to a mix but sits under it — it rarely gives the audience a moment to watch.
Violin
Melodic and visually striking, particularly at weddings; tone competes with dense electronic mids at high volume.
Live vocals
Powerful when the material suits it, but a vocalist over records the crowd already knows as vocal tracks can crowd the original.

Questions.
- What is a DJ with live instruments?
- It is a DJ set performed with live musicians playing on top of it in real time. The mix stays continuous and the live playing is layered over the records, rather than the band performing songs start to finish.
- Which instrument works best over a DJ set?
- It depends on the room and the music, but electric guitar has two practical advantages: it occupies a frequency range that can be shaped to sit above a dense, limited mix, and it is already the defining sound of a large share of the records people want to hear — country, rock, punk and pop-punk.
- Does Mixmode offer saxophone, violin or percussion?
- No. Mixmode is a DJ and live electric guitar act. Booking one format and rehearsing it repeatedly is the reason the show holds together; we do not add instruments we have not toured.
- Is the live instrument played for the whole set?
- At a Mixmode show, yes. Kristian is on stage for the full set. Density varies by moment, but there is a live player performing throughout, not a guest feature.
- How much extra production does a live instrument require?
- For Mixmode: one guitar input with a DI and one monitor on top of standard DJ backline. No full-band load-in and no extended line check.
- Is one act better than booking a DJ and a musician separately?
- For most events, yes. Two separate bookings mean two contracts, two advances, and performers who often meet at soundcheck. One rehearsed act arrives with the arrangements and the cues already worked out.
