Mixmode DJ and electric guitarist performing together on stage

    The format

    DJ With Guitar

A DJ with guitar is a live performance where a full DJ set runs continuously while a guitarist plays over it in real time. Mixmode performs the format as one rehearsed touring act: DJ Jordan Miller and electric guitarist Kristian Cruz build the arrangements, transitions, drops and solos together, rather than adding a session musician on top of a standard DJ set.

“I've never seen a DJ with a guitar before.”
When Mixmode first started bringing electric guitar into the DJ show, that was the reaction we kept hearing from the floor. It is a recurring audience reaction we heard first-hand at our own shows — not a review, a rating, or a quote from a publication.

    Proof

What a DJ with guitar looks like.

Clips filmed at real Mixmode bookings, labelled by city. Each one shows the same thing: a continuous DJ set with live electric guitar played over it on the same stage.

    The difference

    Not an add-on. One act.

A DJ is booked, then a musician is added for part of the night. They may not have played together before the date, and the parts are improvised over whatever gets played.

One act, booked once. The set and the guitar parts are written together, rehearsed together and toured together. One contract, one advance, one line on your stage plot.

The practical result is one cohesive act rather than two performers meeting at a venue. Read the full breakdown on the DJ with guitar page, or see how the format compares with other DJ with live instruments formats.

    The two performers

    One DJ. One electric guitarist.

Mixmode has two members and the roles never swap. Jordan Miller performs the DJ set; Kristian Cruz plays live electric guitar. Both are on stage for the whole show.

Jordan also releases and performs as a solo Country EDM artist at Country EDM artist Jordan Miller — the same person, a separate project. Mixmode is the DJ + electric guitar act.

Jordan Miller — DJ and producer

Mixes the set live, produces the edits the duo performs, and builds the arrangements that leave room for guitar. Jordan does not play guitar in Mixmode.

Kristian Cruz — live electric guitar

Plays every guitar part heard at a Mixmode show live on stage. Nothing is triggered from a backing track.

    How it actually works

Playing electric guitar over a DJ set.

These are the things we had to solve by touring the format, not by reading about it. They are also the details that separate a rehearsed DJ + guitar act from a guitarist standing next to a booth.

    • Keys and arrangement

Every record in the set is checked for key so guitar lines land in tune with the track rather than beside it. Where a hook does not fit, the track is re-edited or the part is rewritten.

    • Tone over mastered music

An amp modeler into a DI keeps the guitar tone consistent room to room and leaves headroom against a mastered, heavily-limited backing track. Mid-forward voicings cut through a dense mix better than scooped tones.

    • Wireless and stage movement

A wireless guitar system lets the guitarist work the front of the stage instead of standing beside the booth — which matters, because seeing the instrument played is half of what makes the format land.

    • Monitoring

The guitarist needs the mix, not just the guitar. One wedge or an IEM pack fed from FOH with the program plus guitar is enough; without it, timing against the track suffers.

    • Festival changeovers

Standard DJ backline plus one guitar input and a DI. There is no full-band load-in, so the changeover is short — one of the practical reasons the format gets booked on tight festival schedules.

    • Soundcheck and latency

Guitar goes through the shortest possible chain to FOH. Anything that adds latency between the pick and the PA makes playing against a locked tempo track harder, so processing stays minimal.

    • Standard DJ backline: two CDJs and a mixer, or equivalent
    • One guitar input with a DI at the stage position
    • One wedge monitor; the setup is IEM-ready
    • Full technical rider, stage plot and input list supplied at advance

    History

Our original DJ + electric guitar show.

Mixmode's DJ + electric guitar format is the act's own purpose-built show, developed through repeated performances rather than assembled for a single booking. The earliest performance of the format documented on this site is Mar 1, 2025 at WTF Sporting Club in Austin, TX, the opening date of the Boots N' Beats 2025 Tour.

The full documented routing — every date, city and venue — is published on the tour archive, and the act's background is on the About Mixmode page.

    Questions

    DJ with guitar, answered.

What is a DJ with guitar?
A DJ with guitar is a performance where the DJ set never stops and a guitarist plays live on top of it — hooks, riffs and solos performed in the room rather than triggered from a track. The audience hears the recorded songs they know, and watches a live instrument being played over them.
What is a DJ with electric guitar?
The same format, played on an electric guitar through a DI or amp modeler into the house system. Electric guitar is used because it sits over mastered electronic music better than an acoustic: the tone can be shaped to cut through a dense mix, and leads carry at festival volume.
How does guitar work over a DJ set?
Tracks are edited so the guitar has somewhere to sit. We check the key of each record, re-key or pick parts that fit, and extend intros and breakdowns so there is space for a live line. The guitarist plays into the same PA as the DJ set, monitored on a wedge or IEMs, and follows the mix rather than a click.
What makes Mixmode different from a DJ who hires a guitarist?
Mixmode is booked as one act. Jordan and Kristian rehearse the material together, tour the same show, and know each other's cues. The guitar parts are written into specific transitions and drops instead of improvised over whatever gets played. Two vendors meeting on the day of an event rarely produces that.
Is the guitar improvised or arranged?
Both, deliberately. The structural moments — the hook that identifies a song, the lead into a drop, the last chorus — are arranged and rehearsed. Inside those markers there is room to improvise and stretch a solo when the floor responds, because the DJ set is being mixed live rather than run from a fixed setlist.
Does the guitarist perform for the entire show?
Yes. Kristian is on stage for the full set, not for a guest spot. Guitar density changes across the night — guitar-forward and quieter for arrivals or a ceremony, heavier through peak — but there is a live player on stage the whole time.
How are drops, solos and transitions coordinated?
By rehearsal and by sightlines. Each arranged moment has a cue the two performers agree on in advance, and the stage positions are set so the guitarist can see the decks. Because the set is mixed live, the DJ can extend a section to let a solo run, or cut it short if the room is ready to move.
What styles of music work with live electric guitar?
Country EDM is the flagship sound, and it works because so much of the source material already has guitar in it. Classic rock, punk and emo, house and hip-hop edits also carry live guitar well. Genre pages on this site explain how each set is built.
What is the difference between Mixmode and hiring a DJ plus a musician?
A DJ plus musician is two bookings, two invoices, and a first rehearsal that often happens at soundcheck. Mixmode is one booking, one rider, one advance, and a show that has already been performed together across a full tour.
    What is a hybrid DJ?
A hybrid DJ combines DJ performance with live instrumentation on the same stage at the same time. Mixmode's specialty within that category is DJ plus live electric guitar.
Can you book a DJ and guitarist together?
Yes — that is the only way Mixmode is booked. One inquiry covers both performers, the technical rider, the stage plot and the advance.
What types of events work well with DJ + live guitar?
Festivals, nightclubs, corporate events, weddings and afterparties, college and Greek life dates, and private events. The format scales because the guitar can carry a quiet room on its own and the DJ set can fill a main stage.
Why does a rehearsed DJ/guitar act feel different from an add-on musician?
Because nothing is being guessed. When a guitarist is added to a DJ set on the day, the safe move is to noodle over the top and stay out of the way. When the same two people have played the material repeatedly, the guitar can take the front of a drop, drop out entirely for a breakdown, and come back on a cue everyone in the act already knows.
